Type 2 Diabetes Chat Series announced

Type 2 Diabetes Chat Series announced

Wow, what a terrific month ahead for learning about type 2 diabetes. In October and November TUDiabetes.org is offering events that will help us learn a lot about type 2 diabetes. For instance, did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control 95% of people identified with diabetes, are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? Yet scanning the list of the 2015 top 23 diabetes blogs (as listed by Healthline) only one is operated solely by a person with type 2 diabetes. With so few type 2 blogs the entire diabetes community of people with diabetes is not well represented in our blogging efforts.

The link between RA and Diabetes

man at computerPerhaps of more significance is that according to EveryDay Health “Having rheumatoid arthritis (RA) makes you about 50 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those without the autoimmune disease.” I have type 1 diabetes and that is why this series on TUDiabetes.org is so exciting. I get to learn something that is very important to the people I blog for.

Here is an example, this past week an acquaintance of mine who knows I blog about diabetes and RA told me of his amazing results using a SGLT-2 class drug. He said his appetite was way down, his A1c had improved dramatically and he felt better now than he has in years. I had heard of the drug, but frankly I know little about it Yet he approached me, not only to express his enthusiasm, but he wanted my reassurance he was doing the best he could to control diabetes. I listened and agreed his results were wonderful, but I know little of this drug, how it works or how others are getting along with it. I was able to compare A1c’s but that was about it.  Frankly, in the type 1 echo chamber where I reside, I have just never paid all that much attention to drug development in the type 2 community.

The beautiful thing about this series being hosted by TUDiabetes.org is that I can learn so much about developments int he type 2 community.  Over these next two months I will be introduced to the people and technology driving advances in the type 2 community. For instance, Gary Taubes a well-respected author and Susan Guzman a clinical psychologist specializing in diabetes have already appeared in our chats. Here is a list of type 2 chats hosted by  TUDiabetes.org  in the coming days:

I am excited to host a discussion on October 22 with Mike Durbin of  “My Diabetic Heart” a noted type 2 blogger where we will discuss life as a person with type 2 diabetes, blogging, heart issues associated with his journey, and how he supports numerous diabetes oriented groups in his area (which is also my area namely Indiana). Mike and I will have a good time talking about why we blog about diabetes. I know this will be a fun chat with a really cool guy.  I suggest you read the set up page to get s sense of this cool guy.

I hope you will join us at TUDiabetes.org for these and many more general discussions about diabetes in the months of October and November. Once you see Emily interview guests you will be hooked (she is a natural).  As for my interview style?  I mostly try to have fun and give some interesting information..

So remember to come laugh and learn in October and November. We always have a great time
