I am writing this at 2 AM on Friday morning since I am awake due to a low. Of course I went to bed high and I corrected, which made me low, and so here I sit. I want to go to pantry and rage eat. I mean I can and would right now consume 5,000 calories if I could and not gain weight or feel ill in the morning. Of course if I consumed what I want I would need to get in the car (not a good idea) and find a pancake place to let it rip. Instead I am having my two favorite foods, a tablespoon of peanut butter and half of a honey crisp apple. ...

Purpose of RADiabetes.com This site is new but it is the product of much planning and a great deal of thought. I formed this site because I have both Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and diabetes so I deal with the real issues caused by each. To me both diseases are a constant issue. The tape image shows a stack of colored tape. For me my life is like that tape. Each disease is staked on the other and all require management to be successful. Two days ago I went riding my bicycle. It was a glorious day. I rode for about 10 miles. But before I set...

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in early Fall 2014 my wife, Sheryl and I went to a new park near our home in Central Indiana just north of Indianapolis. MacGregor Park is a rather large park and not well developed. It was our first visit and we had not prepared for a long hike. This urban park is vast with so many trails it is hard to know where you are or where you are going, and because of budget restrictions, the trails are not well marked. We walked in a circle and then another. We strolled in a wonderfully primordial thick old growth of...

Welcome to RADiabetes (RAD). RAD is a personal web site developed by Rick Phillips to share general information as well as my personal story of living with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes. I also like to poke fun at the diseases, discuss a social issue or two and occasionally tell others about my family life. Even though I am the only person with these diseases, in my family we all live with the consequences and humor that having one or both of these diseases bring. I hope as you visit the site you will find meaning, inspiration and...

I was diagnosed with diabetes and started taking injections of insulin during the summer between my Junior and senior year of High School. I was 17, madder than hell about being diagnosed and determined that no one was going to give me anything because of Diabetes. I admit it was a crazy idea but it was the one I had adopted as school started that year. I suppose at some point I was responsible for telling the office after all I was now an insulin dependent diabetic and had anyone asked, I might have complied. But short of someone coming up...
