Join the Arthritis Power Registry
I know this may sound hokey but I believe in research. Basic research. You know the kind where scientists investigate and collect data to discover why something really ticks. Indeed, basic research is the first step to solving medical issues. I don’t think I’m over-the-top if I say the data that researchers collect is the keystone to knowledge and understanding. And when it comes to solving medical issues, I believe patient driven research the most meaningful of all. So did my mother. My mom who passed from the complications of type 1...

‘Let’s Go’ are two words that sometimes strike terror in my heart. They imply so much and yet we use them casually and with little regard to their meaning for someone with RA or Diaebtes. The other day I was asked by a friend to attend an event that involves standing and moving. She ended her invitation with come on ‘Let’s Go’. She meant it literally she was giving me her affirmation that attendance will be fun (it will), it will be interesting (it will) and it will be educational (it will). I did not hear any of that in her...

I was so excited to attend the 75th American Diabetes Association (ADA) in Boston MA. Earlier this year I applied and had been awarded for a scholarship from the Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) to attend the premier diabetes related scientific conference. I was excited to meet people from the DHF, the Diabetes Online Community (DOC) and others who I have developed working and social relationships with over the past few years. I was pumped, (I know bad metaphor) to attend the ADA sessions. History repeats Then a funny thing happened on the way...

‘Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends’ (Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Karn Evil 9 #2) I love this lyric. Because it reminds me of chronic disease. For me RA and Diabetes is the show that never ends. When I was hospitalized with diabetes, I got my ticket to ‘step inside, step inside” (Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Karn Evil 9 #2). When I was diagnosed with RA I really got to ‘come along come along’ (Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Karn Evil 9 #2). So what did I find when I stepped inside? Many things, doctors,...
read moreFive things only a person with diabetes knows
There is a great little graphic floating around from Healthline.com titled the 29 things only a diabetic knows. I laughed so hard as I read it I nearly cried. I hope you go check it out at. So naturally that got me to thinking, what are the five things this diabetic knows that I bet only a diabetic would know (and maybe only this diabetic knows). So here is my list of five things: 5. The true meaning of 40. Yes many people think 40 is 8 x 5 or 4 x 10. Hogwash if we were in school and someone yells 40 the rest of the class might do...

I am lonely. Well not really, but sort of. Here is the thing, I used to be surrounded by people. Every day I talked to people on the telephone and like most American workers I lived with people who also worked at the office. I took and gave direction on multiple tasks, I was a bundle of energy moving from project to project, idea to idea. I was involved. But now, I am at best a bystander. I get to tune into the Today show and see people who are involved, trend setters if you will and it makes me jealous. Each time I tune in I remember, I used...

Have you heard of the new reality series? It is named DiaCops and their mission is to locate, arrest and lockup diabetes. DiaCops are young, aggressive, hunks and babes who work in Los Angeles. Their headquarters are in a trendy neighborhood, in a restored beautiful 1930’s mansion. This is intentional so that the DiaCops are constantly reminded about the origin of their mission, and the days immediately after the discovery and marketing of insulin. Since 1932 DiaCops have been on the job searching for diabetes where it strikes. When it does...

It is a loaded question and one I never like answering. I see nuance in the answer, where others seek a black and white answer. Usually that question is a check in statement. The asker expects a quick yes and no more. But for me I hear, how are you in relation to your last infusion, pain in my hands, back pain, blood sugar, pump set, carbs eaten at lunch, bicycle ride, and TV schedule for the night. In order to answer truthfully I have to juggle a lot. So as an example let me offer a truthful answer; my blood sugar is 153, my pump set is due...
read moreReview of #DBlog Week
The very first inspiration for Diabetes Blog Week was to help connect our blogging community, and that continues to be the most important reason it’s held every year. So let’s help foster and continue those connections as we wrap up another #Dblog Week. Share a link to a new blog you’ve found or a new friend you’ve made. This year’s #Dblog week has been stressful. I had so many other things to do that it was difficult to keep up, let alone read other blogs. Ugh, it has been a hell week for certain. Still I made it, I...
