Language and Diabetes – Wednesday 5/18 – There is an old saying that states “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I’m willing to bet we’ve all disagreed with this at some point, and especially when it comes to...

Today is the first week of Diabetes Blog week. Each day we have a prompt and are called on to post a response. You can read all responses at my friend Karen’s site Bitter~Sweet. Also please remember RABlog week will occur in September. I hope you join the fun then as well. Prompt 1 for Monday Let’s kick off the week by talking about why we are here in the diabetes blog space. What is the most important diabetes awareness message to you? Why is that message important for you, and what are you trying to accomplish by sharing it on...

This week I was excited to receive Consumer Reports magazine (June 2016 edition) until I looked at the cover and saw a familiar refrain about pain, or more specifically pain medications. I was hopeful that Consumer Reports might step up to help the public understand the issue with pain medications is not as one dimensional as many publications portray. If anything, this cover story perpetuates the stereotype. I expected better from Consumer Reports. Nothing Inaccurate Let me say at the outset that I did not find anything inaccurate in the...

Most of us in the diabetes community are very upset about the recently published United Health Care (UHC) deal with Medtronic. To review, as best as I understand, Medtronic and UHC have announced an agreement that will limit the purchase of pumps after July 1 for people covered by UHC plans exclusively to Medtronic. Diabetes Mine, Diatribe, and Dpac provide a full explanation which I hope you will read. Their reporting is outstanding so I will not restate it here. My Pump Preference To be clear, I am a well satisfied Medtronic pump user. ...

I went over 20 years without seeing any kind of doctor. Let that sink in for a minute. I was a type 1 Person With Diabetes (PWD) and I refused to see a doctor. I bought my insulin and syringes ala-cart, I self-prescribed the dose and I went on living my life. I was not healthy. I was living; but I was not healthy. I now have 16 doctors, I have had open heart surgery (congenital anomaly), I dutifully see an Endocrinologist, and I regularly see my Rheumatologist. So what changed? If anything, it was a nagging thought that I could do...

Disclaimer: Janssen Global Services paid travel expenses for my attendance at the conference. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own. Skeptical at first When I was selected to go to HealtheVoices 2016 I was a bit skeptical. What exactly was this all about was my question. But then the excitement of the event began to build. I leaned that being selected meant that someone else thought what I do for advocacy and blogging was worth enough to invest in. I was amazed at how smooth the preconference arrangements were made. ...

In the Midwest wells are common. We drill them for farms, houses, even industrial applications. The deeper your well, the sweeter the water. So let’s say you run a farm operation and need a good supply of fresh water but it need not be especially appealing to the human pallet. Perhaps you water fields; so in that instance you might drill 100 feet in order to get a good steady supply of water but not really water you would serve in a household which might require a depth of 150 feet. Wells are important Wells are a big business in...

I have been given this product as part of a product review through the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in now way influenced by the company. This has been a busy week of reviews here at RADiabetes, and that coupled with some commitments on TUDiabetes have made me a bit late getting all the reviews done. But this is number 3 of 3 and I promise to get back to my typical posts next week. But in the meantime, I have been asked to perform this sponsored review...
